PROPHETSTOWN — Gladys Mae Swanson, 100, of Prophetstown, died Friday, March 15, 2019, at Prophetstown Good Samaritan Center.
Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 18 at Prophetstown United Methodist Church preceded by visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Rev. Mark Meyers will be officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown.
The Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home in Prophetstown is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials have been established to Prophetstown United Methodist Church, Pat’s Table and Royal Neighbors of America.
Gladys was born March 10, 1919, in Prophetstown to Hiram and Ada Mae (Sibley) Meier. She was educated in the Prophetstown Grade School and attended Prophetstown High School. Gladys married Bert A. Swanson on June 5, 1937, in Morrison. He died Oct. 13, 1989.
Gladys, along with her late husband, Bert, owned and operated Swanson Trucking in Prophetstown. She was a member of the Prophetstown United Methodist Church and the church’s United Methodist Women’s Association. She was also a member of Royal Neighbors of America. Gladys enjoyed word puzzles, game shows, and sports, especially basketball. She was also an avid Chicago Cubs and Bulls Fan. She also enjoyed baking cookies for her family at Christmas.
Survivors include one daughter, Connie (Earl) Murphy of Prophetstown; four sons, Charles “Chuck” (Janice) Swanson of Prophetstown, Neil (Marianne) Swanson of Rochelle, Ronald Swanson of Prophetstown and Rick (Sheri) Swanson of Prophetstown; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bert; three grandchildren, Tab Swanson, Elizabeth and David Swanson; two sisters, Emma Rosenow and Genevieve Wirth; four brothers, and Arnold “Buck” Meier, Russell Meier, Fred Meier Jr. and Marshall Meier.
