MENDOTA — Rochelle seniors Garrett Glosser and Noah Griffith have each made one sectional appearance, but neither golfer had advanced beyond the regional level alongside the other. That changed when the two boys led the Hubs varsity golf team at the IHSA Class 2A Regional in Mendota on a windy Tuesday morning.

Rochelle tied for eighth place out of 10 teams in the regional, shooting 375 behind Glosser and Griffith, who shot respective scores of 87 and 89 to qualify for the IHSA Class 2A Sectional in Grayslake on Tuesday, Oct. 10. While the course conditions weren’t favorable, the two seniors are grateful to extend their final high school seasons.

“It’s a great experience to not be alone going to a big event like sectionals,” Glosser said. “The course conditions were rough because of the strong wind blowing my ball in unfortunate spots but I battled and made it out.”

“It’s awesome,” Griffith added. “Garrett made it during his sophomore year and I made it my junior year, so it’s a great experience going with a friend… The wind was very tough, so it was hard to adjust.”

Junior Hayden Jones scored 95 to finish four strokes off the qualifying mark, while junior Brady Shank (104) and senior Tyler Nalley (110) rounded out the Hubs varsity golf team on Tuesday. Alleman scored 331 to edge out Geneseo (339) and Sterling (347) for the regional title, with Sterling’s Nick Ceruzzi shooting a 3-under-par 67 to win the individual championship.

The season may be over for their teammates, but Griffith and Glosser will look to shoot their way to the state meet next week.

“I need to focus on my consistency and mental toughness,” Griffith said. “I just need to play loose and have fun. If I do that, I’ll be alright.”

“I kept the ball straight until the wind took it and I had some critical chips and putts the save me strokes at the end of the round,” Glosser continued.
