ROCHELLE — Lady Hub sophomore Megan Thiravong spent countless hours golfing during the summer to prepare for the high school season, and the one-time state qualifier has showed no signs of slowing down as Rochelle continued its conference schedule with a home match against Morris at Fairways Golf Course on Thursday.

Thiravong led the Rochelle varsity team with 44 against the Redskins, posting Rochelle’s lowest score for the third consecutive match. The sophomore standout is excited to be back in action with her teammates, and she’s looking to continue building off her successful freshman season.

“It’s nice to go right from the summer season to the high school season because I’m already warmed up and ready to go,” Thiravong said. “We’re only going to get better as the season goes on… I’m hoping to do as much as I can to get ready for the postseason this year, and I hope to be one of the top 25 girls competing for the state championship.”

Sophomore Reese Kirk added 54 for the Hubs on Thursday, while junior Sean Flanagan posted 57 to round out Rochelle’s varsity lineup. The Hubs will travel for the Geneseo Invitational at Maple Bluff this weekend before taking on DeKalb at Kishwaukee Country Club on Monday, Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. Rochelle’s junior varsity boys will play at River Heights on Monday.

Sophomore Ben Ranken scored 59 to lead the junior varsity Hubs against Morris on Thursday, while freshman Shepard Hayes added 61. Rochelle will be looking to add players to its varsity lineup as the season progresses, but for now, players including Thiravong are focused on improving their individual scores, not team scores.

“Focusing on our individual games is great because we can all improve as opposed to worrying about somebody not shooting as well as they’re supposed to,” Thiravong said. “Everybody can be happy with what they shoot or what they’d like to shoot. We can set personal goals and that’s great because we all have goals for every match and we do our best to meet those.”
