BULL VALLEY — Rochelle sophomore Megan Thiravong already has one deep postseason run in her high school golf career, and the Lady Hub standout took another important step toward making another strong push with a top-3 finish in the IHSA Class 1A Johnsburg Regional at Boone Creek Golf Club on Wednesday.

Roughly one week removed from taking second place in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Championship, Thiravong finished third in the regional tournament on Wednesday, shooting 40 over the front nine before cooling off with 46 on the back nine for a final total of 86. Thiravong will advance to compete in the IHSA Class 1A Freeport (Aquin) Sectional at Park Hills Golf Course in Freeport on Monday, Oct. 8.

“It’s an honor to move on to the sectional tournament for the second year in a row,” Thiravong said. “I didn’t play very well today, but I’ll have some improvements to make on the next tournament.”

Windy conditions and thick rough made the regional tournament difficult for many players on Wednesday. The narrow course also forced Thiravong and the other competitors to be accurate with tee shots and fairway irons in order to avoid losing strokes. Thiravong took advantage of the faster greens to shave some strokes off her score.

“The course was very tough in some places,” Thiravong said. “It was very narrow and the rough was very thick. If you didn’t hit the ball straight, you’d land in the rough and it wasn’t a fun time hitting out of the rough. The greens were in great condition because they were fast and they were cut short. The wind was definitely a factor for everybody. As the wind became stronger, it became tougher to hit the ball onto the greens.”

Thiravong said the par-71 course proved to be more difficult on the back nine, and as the day wore on, endurance came into play for most golfers. She said she plans to shoot a practice round at Park Hills on Friday to gain an idea of how the sectional course will play for the tournament on Monday.

“On the front nine… It was still early in the morning and I was still full of energy,” Thiravong said. “When we went to the prairie side, it was later in the day and the wind picked up throughout the day… I’ll be taking a practice round Friday to make sure I know the course and so I can see it beforehand. It’ll provide an opportunity for me to see what I’ll be up against.”
