ROCHELLE — Sunday marked almost three years since Jon Woeppel was last named club champion at Fairways Golf Course. That drought ended this past weekend, however, after Woeppel fired 18-hole rounds of 69, 65 and 69 to win the club championship with a 5-over-par 203. Woeppel edged out runner-up Josh Johnson, who placed second with 206.

“The conditions were tough but it felt good to win,” Woeppel said. “I’ve been playing in this tournament since I was in high school and it’s just a tournament I love to play. The course was in fantastic shape and Mitch Hamilton, the course superintendent, does a fantastic job.”

George Weber placed third with 211, while Colton Guy (214), David Shaw (220) and Dakota Johnson (240) rounded out the top finishers in the 54-hole event. Rick Kessen won the “A” flight of the competition with a 233, while Tony Turner finished second with 235 and Tim Duncan took third with 241. The tournament teed off Saturday before concluding Sunday.

Woeppel led Johnson and Guy by one stroke after the first 18 holes of tournament play. Both Woeppel and Johnson carded 65 over the second 18-hole stretch, but Woeppel (69) outpaced Johnson (71) throughout the final 18 holes.

“I think the biggest thing for me this year was playing the ball safely, hitting the fairways and hitting the middle of the greens,” Woeppel said. “I tried to avoid making any big numbers, and I minimized my mistakes.”
