MENDOTA — The Hubs varsity tennis team opened its season at Mendota on Tuesday, with senior Noah Griffith recording Rochelle’s lone point in a 4-1 nonconference loss against the Trojans. The Hubs fall to 0-1 overall.
Griffith faced Mendota’s Jose Diaz in No. 1 singles, and the senior cruised to his first win of the year by taking down Diaz in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). Senior Kevin Zheng took the court for Rochelle in No. 2 singles, and Zheng fought a close battle against Mendota’s Preston Lewis but fell just short in two sets (5-7, 5-7).
Juniors Emilio Nava and Hector Garcia took on Mendota’s Paco Romero and Favian Arteaga in No. 1 doubles, with Nava and Garcia falling in straight sets (1-6, 4-6). Junior Chris Jones and sophomore Alexis Quintanilla lost at No. 2 doubles against Mendota’s Aaron Brandner and Noah DeLong (0-6, 2-6), while senior Ozzy Fulgencio and sophomore James Doering suffered a two-set defeat at No. 3 doubles against Mendota’s Alexis Perez and Zach Rinaldo (1-6, 4-6).
