ROCHELLE — Things may not have went Noah Griffith’s way at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Varsity Tennis Meet this past Saturday, but the junior’s effort in No. 1 singles was still good enough for second place, and his performance helped lead the Hubs to sixth place overall.
Rochelle scored 16 points in the meet, with seven points coming from Griffith, who began his day with wins over LaSalle-Peru’s Abhi Patel (6-0, 6-0) and Yorkville’s Eric Naumann (6-2, 6-2). The junior faced Sterling’s Dillon Nitz for the conference title, with Nitz edging out Griffith 6-4, 6-4 for first place.
Sophomore Emilio Nava represented the Hubs in No. 2 singles, falling to Sterling’s Henry Steinhagen 6-0, 6-0 before dropping a match to DeKalb’s Genco Akacik 6-2, 6-2 in consolation play. Nava finished seventh overall and scored two points for Rochelle.
The Hubs placed seventh in both No. 1 (senior Bryan Garcia and sophomore Juan Montemayor) and No. 2 doubles (junior Kevin Zheng and sophomore Hector Garcia), while the No. 3 doubles team of juniors Ozzy Fulgencio and Tyler Nalley took eighth. The doubles teams combined to score five points.
