Crandall among Class of 2017 honorees

ROCHELLE — Kevin Crandall doesn’t like drawing attention to himself, but the Hubs varsity football coach will be unable to avoid the spotlight when Rochelle hosts the Yorkville Foxes on Friday for the school’s annual Hall of Fame night.

Crandall is one of seven inductees in the Class of 2017 who will be honored after the sophomore football game, which is scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m. Other incoming members include Mike Pence, Stacey Hultgren, Angie Pullin-Smardo, Todd Smith, Joseph Kaisher and Bobby Chadwick. It’s not often that a head coach is enshrined before completing his final game, but Crandall is staying focused as his last season with the Hubs moves forward.

“It’s a nice honor but I would certainly trade it in for the win,” Crandall said. “It’s easier to worry about that stuff once the season is over… Maybe they were afraid I wouldn’t come back next year.”

The Foxes (1-1) are coming off a 49-0 victory over Marian Central Catholic, while the Hubs (1-1) are looking to rebound from a 40-22 loss to the Johnsburg Skyhawks. Rochelle totaled 376 yards of offense while holding Johnsburg to a 10-8 lead at halftime, but a trio of key plays including a turnover on downs, a fumble and an interception-turned-touchdown for the Skyhawks doomed the Hubs in the end.

“We can’t turn the ball over,” Crandall said. “We had a goal going in to not give up too many big plays and we obviously gave up a lot of big plays… We have to make Yorkville sustain drives if they’re going to score and we can’t give them such big chunks.”

Yorkville struggled down the stretch in 2016, losing six of its last seven games to finish with a 2-7 record. But the Foxes played the Hubs close last season, and while Rochelle escaped Yorkville with an 18-14 victory, Crandall is not taking this year’s matchup lightly.

“In some respects we were fortunate to come out with a win,” Crandall said. “We have to do a better job of not giving up big plays, especially in the passing game. We had roughly 380 yards last week and only scored three times, so if we’re going to have that type of offensive production again, we have to do a better job of scoring.”

The Foxes will be without wide receiving threat Jason Lewan, who graduated this spring and is continuing his football career at Illinois State. Quarterback Ty Liaromatis is expected to be under center again, though, and Yorkville is returning a few players on offense including running back Trent Delaney, who rushed for 111 yards and one touchdown against the Hubs last year.

“We have to play better in the secondary and I think we have to be really good on offense,” Crandall said. “We need to take time off the clock and punch our drives in for scores.”

Seniors Alex Harvey and Ehren Metzger combined for 149 rushing yards against Yorkville in 2016, and the two backs will be tasked with carrying the load once again. Metzger totaled 18 carries for 123 yards and two touchdowns against Johnsburg, while Harvey added 83 yards on 18 carries.

“In the past we’ve had pretty good success running all of our offense,” Crandall said. “We threw the ball a bit more last year and I assume we’ll have to throw the ball a little more this year. A lot of times we get a defense we haven’t seen before, so we have to figure out what they’re trying to take away and what they’re trying to give us.”
