ROCHELLE — After discovering her 4-H club could no longer host horse shows, one Rochelle teen found a way.
Amanda Headon, with the help of her mother Cass and the 4-H club are planning the second “Maizey’s Acres Open Horse Show,” scheduled for June 24 and 25 at the Diamond G Western Ranch in Rochelle.
“The show went so well last year, we agreed to do it again this year,” said Cass, Headon, Amanda’s mother. “We are hoping to see more riders come out this year.”
Cass and Amie McDermott are leaders of the 4-H club, “Bits ‘N Reins,” based in Ogle County.
Cass explained that shortly before last year’s scheduled horse show, 4-H canceled the event due to insurance reasons. That’s when she heard about another way to still showcase the event by purchasing private insurance.
Proceeds from last year’s two-day event, which included about 50 entrants, netted Bits ‘N Reins $2,000. This year will be the same with all profits going to the 4-H club.
Bits ‘N Reins members have recruited sponsors for the horse show, which help offset the cost for the ribbons and awards.
“There are many events planned. We will having jumping in the morning on Saturday, riding, ground classes, halter and showmanship,” Amanda said, describing the upcoming horse show. “We also have barrels, poles, flags, and speed horses and on Sunday we have high point.
Amanda is no stranger to horseback riding, first started when she was five years old. She now has three horses and participates in many horse shows. Amanda is also active in FFA, attending several career development events throughout the year and recently won first place at a national convention.
