ROCHELLE — Santa and his elves were busy Thursday evening helping to brighten the Christmas season for over 200 area children and their families during the annual Rochelle Community Action Network Shopping Trip.
Hundreds of volunteers around the community, including Rochelle Township High School and Kishwaukee College service clubs, came together to take the children shopping and wrap presents for the event.
Along with the shopping trip to Walmart, the children and their families enjoyed dinner prepared by members of LULAC Rochelle. CAN received donations from Big R, LULAC Rochelle, MightyVine, and Alfano’s Pizza to accompany the spaghetti dinner.
Lee Ogle Transportation Service provided door-to-door shuttle service for the shoppers, which was new this year.
“We had a great event once again,” said Michelle Pease. “All of us at CAN are grateful for all of the volunteers and donations that helped make this a success. LOTS shuttles were an amazing addition to the night.”
CAN board member Eva Chu said several individuals and organizations donated toys and books for the children. During the shopping trip, adult volunteers were provide a gift card and helped children choose items such as winter weather gear, pajamas, an outfit, and a toy.

“About 225 children received new books donated by the Flagg-Rochelle Public Library, new toys donated by the Hub City Cruisers and distributed by Santa, new coats from Operation Warm, and coloring books and crayons donated by local insurance companies,” said Chu.
