Griffith improves to 9-0 in 4-1 team loss

STERLING — Junior Noah Griffith won his ninth consecutive singles match to remain unbeaten on the season when the Hubs varsity tennis team battled the Sterling Golden Warriors on Thursday. But it wouldn’t be enough to bring Rochelle a team victory.

The Hubs lost by a final score of 4-1, with Griffith taking down Sterling freshman Dillon Nitz 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 in No. 1 singles to notch Rochelle’s lone win on the afternoon. Junior Kevin Zheng took on Sterling junior Henry Steinhagen in No. 2 singles, with Steinhagen emerging victorious 6-1, 6-0.

Sophomores Juan Montemayor and Hector Garcia nearly brought Rochelle its second point of the day, taking the first set of their match with Sterling junior Dawson Koett and sophomore Luke Steinke but dropping the second and third sets to fall by a final score of 7-6 (5), 3-6, 3-6. Senior Bryan Garcia and junior Jesus Nava lost 1-6, 1-6, while juniors Ozzy Fulgencio and Tyler Nalley fell 0-6, 0-6.

The loss bumps Rochelle down to 3-7 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.

Frosh/Soph

Sophomore Emilio Nava scored the Rochelle freshman-sophomore team’s match on Thursday, beating Jonas Hicks 10-7 in a 4-1 team loss to the Golden Warriors. Freshman Ben Hickey took on Sterling sophomore Grant Bright, with Hickey falling by a score of 10-0.

Two doubles pairs came within three games of winning for the Hubs, with freshmen Alexis Quintanilla and Max Torres dropping their match to Matt Valentino and Nathaniel Stout 7-10 and freshmen Gabe Nava and Saul Alanis falling 7-10 to Andres Olalde and Jacob Knott. Freshmen James Doering and Parker Hale lost 1-10 to round out the freshman-sophomore squad.
