Rochelle falls to Redskins 4-1, downed 7-0 by Blue Thunder

MORRIS — After falling to the Belvidere North Blue Thunder by a score of 7-0 this past Wednesday, the Hubs varsity tennis team went to Morris Community High School for a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference match against the Redskins.

Rochelle lost the match by a score of 4-1, with junior Noah Griffith taking down Morris junior Brandon Carter 6-3, 6-2 for the Hubs’ lone point on the day. It was the 11th singles win of the season for Griffith, who bounced back nicely after suffering his first loss of the year (2-6, 0-6) to Belvidere North senior Anderson Park on Wednesday.

Junior Kevin Zheng fell to Morris junior Peter Smyk in No. 2 singles by a score of 0-6, 1-6, and the Redskins took all three doubles points to seal the match. Rochelle sophomores Juan Montemayor and Hector Garcia took Nolan Robbins and Oscar Segura of Morris to three sets, but the boys lost by a final score of 3-6, 6-3, 0-6.

The Hubs fall to 4-9 on the season, and the purple and white will host the Hub Varsity Invitational this weekend before returning to dual competition against Dixon on Monday.

The Hubs freshman-sophomore tennis team nearly picked up a victory on Thursday, falling to Morris by a score of 3-2 after suffering a sweep by the hands of Belvidere North.

Rochelle points came in doubles action, with sophomore Diego Lopez and freshman Max Torres taking down Taite Burns and Aaron Johnson 8-3 in No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Nate Castro and freshman James Doering defeated Izak Provance and Eric Echeverria 9-8 (0) in No. 3 doubles to secure the Hubs’ second point.
