MAPLE PARK — Johnny Beck was scoring early and often when the Hubs varsity basketball team faced the Kaneland Knights on the road Friday evening.
The 6-foot-8-inch junior forward had 26 points at halftime, and he finished with a season-high 40 points in Rochelle’s 86-73 win over the Knights. The victory improved Rochelle’s record to 9-5 overall.
“We were running up and down the court,” Beck said. “We scored a lot of layups early and we kept going in the second half after they got tired. My guards were getting me good looks, especially on fast breaks. They were finding me every time. Hopefully we can play at this tempo for the rest of the season.”
Senior Angel Aguirre added 21 points for Rochelle, while seniors Noah Mershon, Noah Griffith and Riley Lodico combined for 18 points in the victory. Friday’s game was a far contrast to last year’s matchup with Kaneland, when the Hubs grinded out a 60-50 win at home.
“They were able to pack us in last year and we didn’t shoot the ball all that great,” head coach Tim Thompson said. “Today we were able to get out and run and I think the kids were really attacking the lane. We were passing the ball well and we were able to get easy buckets… Johnny’s teammates were finding him and he was running the floor like we’ve been asking him to. He can really elevate, and that was one of the better scoring performances I’ve seen in my 19 years here.”
