Hubs bowling team falls to Geneseo

Shank rolls 581 series to lead Rochelle against Maple Leafs

ROCHELLE — A lack of depth continued to hurt the Hubs varsity bowling team when Rochelle hosted the Geneseo Maple Leafs in Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference action Tuesday night at T-Byrd Lanes.

Playing without two of its members for the third consecutive meet, Rochelle still managed to come within three pins of taking the opening game. But the Hubs were unable to match their strong start over the final two games, and Geneseo went on to sweep Rochelle 10-0 by a total score of 2,992-2,750.

“Missing one of our guys throws the team out of sync,” head coach Doug Koch said. “The score becomes so lopsided that, when they look at the score and see how far behind they are, they have a tendency to give up as opposed to pushing themselves to try and keep up with the other team.”

Juniors Dallas Driver and Tyler Johnson each cracked 200 in the opening game, with Driver rolling 206 and Johnson adding 205. Geneseo edged Rochelle 1,017-1,014 behind 250 from Kyler Rusk and 194 from Braeden Keller.

The Hubs struggled to adjust to the changing conditions in the second game, falling to the Maple Leafs 985-891. Junior Brady Shank’s 177 was Rochelle’s highest total, while Rusk and Keller continued to pace Geneseo with respective scores of 235 and 194.

“I think they jumped to changing balls too fast,” Koch said. “Instead of making a couple of slight adjustments, they picked up another ball and they had to line themselves up again. It only takes a couple of bad throws to take your score down.”

Geneseo completed its sweep by taking the third and final game 990-885. Rusk threw 229 to finish with a match-high 714 series, while Shank led Rochelle with 231 to end the match with a 581 series. Johnson recorded a 540 series, and Driver tossed 509. The Hubs fall to 0-3 on the season.

“I think we could’ve had the match,” Koch said. “We were within three pins of taking the first game… When we go to Geneseo, maybe we’ll have our sixth bowler and we can show them what Rochelle can really do.”
