Hubs bowling team struggles at Streator

Driver rolls team-high 211 game in loss to Bulldogs

STREATOR — The lane conditions at Elks Lodge proved too difficult for the Hubs varsity bowling team to overcome when the Rochelle boys traveled to Streator on Wednesday for a nonconference match against the Bulldogs.

With just four lanes to compete on, the layout at Elks Lodge was much different than what head coach Doug Koch and the Hubs have seen this season. But with the oil drying up quickly, the Hubs were unable to adjust well enough to top Streator, falling 2,519-2,307 to drop to 0-4 overall.

“I think the boys did OK,” Koch said. “I told them that they have to get used to bowling in different places. It was a shock for them, but I thought it was an eye-opener for them too.”

Zack Grabowski’s 212 and Max O’Brien’s 200 propelled Streator to a 911-741 win in the first game. Junior Brady Shank led Rochelle with 188 while senior Mark Bratko added 168. The Bulldogs took the second game as well by a score of 853-772 behind Grabowski’s 203 and Jesse Cashmer’s 195.

Shank scored 187 to top the Rochelle scoreboard in the second game with juniors Tyler Johnson and Dallas Driver each shooting 158. Driver saved his best effort for last, though, rolling a team-high 211 in the third game to lead the Hubs in a 794-755 victory during the third and final game. The 39-pin game win was Rochelle’s first throughout any match this season.

“It was nice to see Dallas finish strong especially since his thumb was really bothering him,” Koch said. “It was good to see him open up and trust himself more.”

Rochelle will be away from action until Saturday, Nov. 25 when the Hubs are scheduled to compete in the Harlem Varsity Invitational at Forest Hills. With over a week’s worth of time to recharge their batteries, Koch will be looking to work with his players on playing the outside part of the lane.

“We’re going to practice and we’re going to try to move over and throw the ball straighter,” Koch said. “We’re going to throw the ball up the outside and really focus on that.”
