Hubs cruise past Princeton to remain perfect at home

Seebach scores season-high 28 points to lead Rochelle over Tigers 83-62

ROCHELLE — Kyle Seebach has been the Hubs varsity basketball team’s primary low-post scorer this season, but the 6-foot-8 senior showed a little bit of his range when Rochelle took on the Princeton Tigers Friday night at Rochelle Township High School.

Seebach turned in a season-high 28 points and knocked down three 3-point shots to lead the Hubs to an 83-62 victory over the Tigers in nonconference play. The victory bumps Rochelle (18-6, 8-4 NIB-12) up to a perfect 7-0 at home this year with two more regular season games to be played at RTHS.

“He’d probably love to shoot more 3-pointers,” head coach Tim Thompson said jokingly. “Tonight was one of those situations where their big guys were sagging so hard that Kyle’s got to hit them. It’s something that we’ll use against teams in the future knowing he can shoot it.”

The Hubs were getting everything they wanted early in the first quarter, starting the game on a 15-2 run and forcing a Princeton timeout. But the Tigers responded with a 13-2 run of their own to close the game to four points when the game clock expired at the end of the quarter.

“We were pressing and we were getting some easy buckets, and then we went on a stretch where they got some run-outs on us,” Thompson said. “That’s going to happen with the defense we play, but we also went on a cold streak where we were going 1-and-out on our offensive possessions.”

That’s when Seebach and senior Caleb Gould took over the game, scoring 17 of Rochelle’s next 26 points and finishing the first half with 28 of the team’s 43 points to give the Hubs a 14-point lead. Combined with the team’s standard defensive pressure, Rochelle forced several Princeton turnovers in the full court and prevented key players Joshua Reinhardt and Colby Robbins from doing too much damage.

“I felt like the Tigers were going to struggle in the second quarter,” Thompson said. “We were playing for the second and fourth quarters to wear them down and in the second quarter I think they got a little tired and we were able to make a run. We kept out defense up in the third quarter and we were able to extend our lead.”

Seebach continued to terrorize Princeton in the third quarter, hitting the third of his three 3-pointers to put Rochelle up by 17 points. The senior had 26 points by the end of the third quarter, with the Hubs leading the Tigers 66-45.

Eleven different players scored in the game for Rochelle, with Gould ending up with 17 points and senior Landon Griffith chipping in nine points. Senior Matt Albers and junior Angel Aguirre combined for 11 points, while junior Komla Gati and senior Kaywan Palmer each totaled four points. Sophomore Johnny Beck had two points after leading the sophomore team to a 55-38 victory earlier in the night with 16 points.

With a substantial lead in the fourth quarter, Thompson unloaded his bench and gave some of his reserves a chance to shine. And the boys responded by holding the Tigers to an even 17-17 scoring spread in the quarter behind five points from junior Noah Griffith, two points from senior Sam Christensen and one point from junior Garrett Glosser.

The Hubs will play Dixon on Wednesday before wrapping up the regular season against the Sterling Golden Warriors on Senior Night next Friday.
