Hubs golf team shoots season-low score at Sycamore

Griffith leads Rochelle with 35

SYCAMORE — Rochelle senior Noah Griffith found his rhythm early when the Hubs varsity golf team battled the Sycamore Spartans at the Sycamore Park District Golf Club on Wednesday.

Taking advantage of the course’s open setting and straight fairways, Griffith shot a season-low score of 35 to anchor the Rochelle varsity team, which shot a season-best 174. But the Spartans proved to be too tough on their home course, scoring a 153 behind three sub-40 rounds to pick up the team victory.

“I started well and I just kept going,” Griffith said. “I hit my fairways and my greens… Everything was working well for me. My drives were going into the fairways and my approach shots leading up to the greens were really good.”

Griffith’s score was the best of any team on Wednesday, but Rochelle couldn’t make up the gap behind him. Junior Hayden Jones shot a season-low score of 45, with senior Garrett Glosser adding a 46 and junior Brady Shank totaling 48 strokes to round out the Hubs’ top four scores. Freshman Megan Thiravong shot a 51 in her varsity debut, and junior Isaac Green recorded a 56 after making his first varsity start against Morris on Tuesday.

The loss drops Rochelle to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference, but Griffith said that he thinks the Hubs are continuing to improve. With a tournament in Geneseo coming up this weekend, Griffith and his teammates will aim to keep their scores low as the season progresses.

“We’ve dropped a lot of strokes over our last three meets,” Griffith said. “We just have to keep the momentum going and we’ll get to those low scores.”

Junior Luke Stecker led the Rochelle junior varsity golf team in a 186-222 loss to the Sycamore Spartans on Wednesday. Stecker totaled 50 strokes after shooting a 51 in his first varsity match against Morris on Tuesday.

Junior Ryan Friestad added a 56, with sophomore Logan Ortega (57) and freshman Sam Hacaga (59) rounding out the Hubs’ top four junior varsity scores. Freshmen Reese Kirk and Ben Rankin recorded respective rounds of 67.
