PRINCETON — The Hubs varsity golf team may be approaching the end of its season, but the Rochelle players are continuing to boost their confidence after putting in their best tournament performance in recent years.
Behind senior Noah Griffith’s 82, the Hubs finished second out of nine teams in the 2017 Princeton Invitational at Chapel Hill Golf Course and Events Center this past Saturday, shooting 341 to edge out Mendota (342). Bureau Valley took first with a 324, while Griffith’s score was good enough for seventh place individually.
“It felt pretty good considering we haven’t done our best at tournaments this year,” said junior Brady Shank, who shot 96 to help Rochelle on Saturday. “I was familiar with the course from last year so I knew the angles, and I was a little nervous coming in but I felt comfortable on the course after the first few holes. The conditions were pretty good, and it was just a really good day overall.”
Junior Hayden Jones finished one stroke behind Griffith, shooting 83 while senior Garrett Glosser added 88. The runner-up performance came two days after Rochelle took down the LaSalle-Peru Cavaliers at Fairways Golf Course for the team’s first conference victory of the year.
“I didn’t know how well we were doing but it felt great,” Jones said. “We’ve never finished that well as a team… I was hitting the ball well down the middle because the course was pretty narrow. Keeping the ball straight helped me and I was hitting my greens, but my putting kept me from finishing lower.”
Freshman Megan Thiravong (88) and senior Tyler Nalley (106) rounded out the Rochelle varsity team on Saturday. The Hubs are as confident as they’ve ever been, and the players will look to continue their recent success when they face off against the Sterling Golden Warriors on the road Tuesday evening.
“I heard that we hadn’t won any awards in a while, and everybody has been practicing really hard,” Thiravong said. “We earned it. It was a very difficult course, and it had a lot of turns and bends… My confidence in the team is very high, and if we all work together, we can accomplish anything.”
