ROCHELLE — There were nothing but clear skies for the Hubs track and field team as the boys suited up for a triangular meet with the Yorkville Foxes and the Plano Reapers on Tuesday at Rochelle Township High School, the first home meet of the season for the purple and white.
The varsity team landed in second place with 64 points, finishing just behind conference rival Yorkville, who took first with 67. Plano placed third with 54 points.
Rochelle fielded a handful of top runners at the varsity level on Tuesday including senior Matthew Drendel, who finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.87 seconds and second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.55, ending the race a few steps behind RTHS sophomore Austin Walsh, who continued his solid stretch in the open event with a first-place time of 51.98.
Senior Andrew Myers won the high jump at 6-0 after missing some time to an injury, with Matthew Drendel placing second at 5-8. Senior Michael Drendel finished first in the varsity pole vault at 12-0 and second in the triple jump at 39-8 ¼.
Perhaps the most impressive performance of the evening was in the 1600-meter relay, where Rochelle stormed past the field and won with a time of 3:37.63. The victory comes after the boys took first in the 1600-meter relay at the Assumption Invitational this past weekend. Both Matthew and Michael Drendel contributed to the effort, while Walsh and senior Lance Huftalin, who placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.59, pitched in as well.
Frosh/Soph
The Hubs freshman-sophomore squad took second place with 69 points, landing behind Yorkville who finished with 92 points. Sophomore Alex Louck won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.54 while placing second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.59.
Sophomore Connor Lenkaitis ran the 400-meter dash in 57 seconds flat to win first place, and Lenkaitis joined forces with freshman Evan Horner and sophomores Benjamin DaCosta and Jessee Infante to win the 1600-meter relay with a time of 4:04.83. The 3200-meter relay team of Horner and freshmen Santi Cordoba, Tucker Louis and Uzziel Zarate also landed in first, running a time of 9:47.50.
Sophomore Isaac Musselman won the high jump at 5-2 and the triple jump at 36-9 ½, while freshman Traevon Voss placed third in the long jump (17-8) and sophomore Greg Ricketts took third in the shot put (36-10).
