ROCHELLE — Kyle Seebach was wearing down toward the end of Wednesday evening’s conference game against the LaSalle-Peru Cavaliers, but the 6-foot-8-inch lefty found a way to keep the visiting team off the scoreboard.

Mixing fastballs and curveballs with precision, Seebach tossed a complete game and didn’t give up a run in Rochelle’s 5-0 victory over the Cavaliers. The win bumps the Hubs up to 8-7-1 on the season.

“He was throwing both of his pitches for strikes and he was getting ahead with his curveball which was a really nice change of pace,” head coach Jarrod Reynolds said. “He’s tough to hit when he’s hitting both sides of the plate. The key for him is to get ahead in the count.”

Both teams struggled offensively to start the game, going scoreless through the first four innings before Rochelle put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Matt Albers reached base on an error, and after a walk to junior Noah Mershon, No. 9 hitter Riley Lodico came through with a one-out single to plate two of his teammates.

The Hubs added three in the bottom of the sixth inning on three consecutive hits by Seebach (double), Albers (single) and senior Landon Griffith (single). LaSalle-Peru had a chance to score in the top of the seventh after a balk and a walk by Seebach put runners in scoring position, but the left-hander ended the game with a swinging strikeout on a 3-2 fastball above the letters.

“My fastball was tired at the end of the game so I was just trying to pump curveballs,” Seebach said. “But both pitchers were working all game long so I felt good… I feel like we can win the rest of this series.”

Rochelle will host LaSalle-Peru on Thursday before the Hubs travel south to finish the series on the road Friday evening.
