HINCKLEY — The Hubs varsity soccer team felt motivated to nail down a decisive victory after suffering one of their toughest losses of the season against the Sterling Golden Warriors this past week.

That’s exactly what the purple and white did when they took on Hinckley-Big Rock on Saturday, with Rochelle dominating the Royals by a score of 7-0 to improve to 8-4 overall and snap a three-game losing streak.

The Hubs didn’t take long to break the scoring open. Junior Jessee Infante (5’) put in a pass from freshman Zane Walters to give Rochelle a 1-0 lead, and Infante (18’) connected on an assist by junior Adolfo Flores to put Hinckley-Big Rock in a two-goal hole.

“I think we communicated with each other a lot better,” junior Ruben Herrera said. “That 7-0 win was a really good win for us… Sterling made us push more, and losing made us want to win more. We communicated better and we finished our shots better. We need to keep working hard in practice and we need to keep a positive attitude.”

Sophomore Austin Brown (23’) booted in a pass by Infante to give Rochelle a 3-0 lead, and freshman Brayan Orozco (36’) capitalized on Flores’ second assist of the afternoon to put the Royals in an even greater deficit. Saturday’s game was the third time this year the Hubs scored at least seven goals in a victory.

“It felt good to win the game,” junior Josue Almaraz said. “We started communicating more and we were passing and giving up the ball way more. We were making our through balls and we were playing together as a team… Our defense stayed together and we were pressuring the other team as soon as it got the ball.”

Sophomore Max Torres (55’) received Infante’s second assist of the game, and Torres became the fourth Rochelle player to score a goal in the contest. Leading 5-0 in the second half, Herrera found Infante, and the juniors connected to help Infante (60’) compete the hat trick with his third goal of the game. Orozco (62’) kicked a pass from Torres into the Hinckley-Big Rock net for Rochelle’s seventh and final goal.

The Hubs finished Saturday’s game with more corner kicks (5) than Hinckley-Big Rock shots on goal (3), and the boys will aim to continue their recent success when they host DeKalb for a tough conference crossover game on Tuesday.
