ROCKFORD — The Hubs varsity tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak on Wednesday, when the Rochelle boys traveled to Rockford Lutheran and picked up a victory by a final score of 5-2. The Hubs are now 3-5 overall and their next match is at Ottawa on the road Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Rochelle secured three singles points in Wednesday’s win. Senior Noah Griffith defeated Rockford Lutheran’s Zachary Montgomery at No. 1 singles in two sets (6-1, 6-3) while junior Emilio Nava took down Rockford Lutheran’s Lane Kleber in a close two-set affair (6-3, 7-5). Sophomore Sean Flanagan bested Rockford Lutheran’s Frederico Zeni Mala in a single set, 9-7.
Juniors Juan Montemayor and Hector Garcia took down Rockford Lutheran’s Montgomery and Kleber at No. 1 doubles in a single-set match 9-8(1). Sophomores James Doering and Gabe Nava won over Rockford Lutheran’s Benjamin Holmertz and Zeni Mala at No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-0. Senior Kevin Zheng fell to Rockford Lutheran’s Nicholas Logan at No. 2 singles (0-6, 0-6) and both Holmertz and Logan took down Rochelle seniors Jesus Nava and Ozzy Fulgencio at No. 2 doubles 8-3 in one set.
