ROCHELLE — The Hubs tennis team hosted Streator on Monday for one of its final nonconference matches of the season, but the best performance of the afternoon didn’t come from the varsity team.

Rather, it came from the freshman/sophomore team, which defeated the Bulldogs by a score of 5-1 to take home its first match victory of the season (1-11). The win comes after the boys placed seventh at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet this past weekend.

Freshmen Ben Hickey and James Doering each won their matches in singles play, with Hickey taking down Alex Grandos by a score of 8-3 and Doering earning a victory by a score of 8-4. Sophomore Emilio Nava and freshman Alexis Quintanilla represented the Hubs in No. 1 doubles, taking down Jason Houch and Luke Elias 8-1.

In No. 2 doubles, freshmen Max Torres and Luis Vasquez defeated Alonzo Perfanes and Shane Ward 8-3 to seal the match victory. Freshmen Gabriel Nava and Saul Alanis added another point in No. 4 doubles, winning their set by a score of 8-4.

Improving to 19-1 on the season was junior Noah Griffith, who cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Streator senior TJ Moran in No. 1 singles. Junior Kevin Zheng took the court in No. 2 singles, falling 2-6, 3-6 to Bulldog freshman Greg Rashid.

Streator took all three doubles points to win the match by a final score of 4-1. Rochelle’s closest battle came in No. 2 doubles, where senior Bryan Garcia and sophomore Chris Jones took Bulldog seniors Ben Kaschke and Trevor Schmitt to three sets before falling 1-6, 7-5, 8-10. The varsity team moves to 4-11 overall with the loss.
