FREEPORT — The Hubs varsity tennis team placed third at the Freeport Invitational this past Saturday, picking up victories over Rockford East, Rockford Lutheran and Marengo while falling to Freeport and Jacobs to go 3-2 over the five-match tournament. Rochelle moves to 6-10 overall and the Hubs will face Streator, Rockford Christian and Newman Central Catholic this week.
Junior Hector Garcia defeated Rockford East’s Gage Gronau 10-5 at No. 1 singles, while junior Chris Jones topped Felipe Nadalim 10-8 at No. 2 singles. Senior Kevin Zheng and junior Emilio Nava received a forfeit in No. 1 doubles to complete Rochelle’s sweep of Rockford East in the opening round.
Senior Noah Griffith beat Freeport’s Preston Engel 10-8 at No. 1 singles while the Hubs conceited a forfeit at No. 2 singles. Garcia and Zheng won over Dylan Holbert and Colbe Yoder 10-4 at No. 1 doubles but Nava and Jones lost 4-10 to Carter Shockey and Joe Mercier at No. 2 doubles. Freeport earned a forfeit at No. 3 doubles to top Rochelle in the second round.
Griffith bested Rockford Lutheran’s Zachary Montgomery 10-3 at No. 1 singles and Zheng topped Lane Kleber 10-5 at No. 2 singles. Nava and Jones sealed Rochelle’s third-round sweep of Rockford Lutheran with a victory over Benjamin Holmertz and Jin Choi at No. 1 doubles.
Griffith shut down Marengo’s Ethan Schmitt 10-0 at No. 1 singles and Rochelle conceited a forfeit at No. 2 singles. Garcia and Zheng combined to beat Aaron Phillips and Antonio Laino 10-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Jones and Nava defeated Blake Martin and Marco Magrini 10-0 at No. 2 doubles to seal the Hub victory over Marengo in the final round.

Sophomores Sean Flanagan and Gabe Nava represented Rochelle in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Fresh-Soph Conference Championships this past Saturday, with Flanagan placing eighth at No. 1 singles and Nava taking fifth place at No. 2 singles. Nava defeated Morris player Erik Echeverria 6-4, 6-0 to earn fifth. Rochelle finished eighth overall with five team points.
