ROCHELLE — Rochelle sophomores Juan Montemayor and Hector Garcia came up big for the Hubs varsity tennis team on Tuesday when the boys squared off against the LaSalle-Peru Cavaliers in Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference action.

With the match tied 2-2, Montemayor and Garcia defeated LaSalle-Peru’s No. 2 doubles pair of Jalen Depenbrach and Noah Konczak by a score of 7-5, 6-4 to give Rochelle it’s first conference victory of the season. The win bumps the Hubs up to 4-7 overall.

Junior Noah Griffith entered Tuesday’s match with the Cavaliers having won each of his first nine matches in singles play. LaSalle-Peru’s Sam Pantoja stood in the way of win No. 10, but Griffith had no issues getting Rochelle on the board, beating Pantoja 6-0, 6-0 to remain perfect on the season.

Also picking up a point for the Hubs was junior Kevin Zheng, who took down LaSalle-Peru’s Connor Cofoid by a score of 6-3, 6-2 to give Rochelle a 2-0 sweep in singles competition. In doubles play, senior Bryan Garcia and junior Jesus Nava fell to Mason Clark and Matt Adams by a score of 0-6, 1-6.

The Cavaliers tied the match at 2-2 when Nathan Newman and Alex Ponce defeated Rochelle junior Ozzy Fulgencio and sophomore Chris Jones 6-0, 6-3. But Montemayor and Garcia squashed LaSalle-Peru’s comeback effort with their two-set victory.

The Hubs freshman-sophomore tennis team fell to LaSalle-Peru by a score of 4-1, with freshmen James Doering and Max Torres picking up Rochelle’s long point with a 10-7 victory over Nick Langloss and Ray Reed in doubles play.
