Rochelle finishes second in triangular meet with Freeport

FREEPORT — The Hubs varsity golf team fought through some light rain and gusty winds to take second in a triangular meet with the Freeport Pretzels and Dixon Dukes Thursday evening at Freeport’s Park Hills Golf Course.

Senior Garrett Glosser shot a team-low 43 through nine holes, while senior Noah Griffith finished two strokes behind with a 45. Freeport’s varsity team won the meet with a total score of 167, with Rochelle (187) and Dixon (211) placing second and third, respectively.

“It was great for Noah and Garrett to come out strong at a sectional-type course to start their senior year,” head coach Glen Mehrings said. “I knew it would be tough on the greens and they struggled a little bit, but they persevered… Their ball-striking is right there.”

Juniors Hayden Jones (46) and Brady Shank (53) rounded out Rochelle’s top four scores on Thursday, with senior Tyler Nalley shooting a 63 in the No. 5 varsity spot and junior Ryan Friestad totaling 62 at No. 6. Mehrings said he will be looking for both Jones and Shank to step up this season, and the head coach said he’s already seeing improvements from the two juniors.

“Hayden’s shown more maturity on the course,” Mehrings said. “He can handle a big number and he bounced back from a couple of bad holes… Brady hits the ball a lot longer. He just has to adjust to the pace of the greens and get his short game a little tighter so he can save those pars and bogeys.”

Rochelle will travel to face the Morris Redskins on Tuesday before battling the Sycamore Spartans on the road Wednesday. The Hubs finished 10th in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference last season, but Mehrings is confident his team can move up the ladder this season.

“I think we have more depth,” Mehrings said. “We have around six players who can shoot 45 or under and that’s great to have… We want to be competitive in every match.”
