STILLMAN VALLEY — The excitement of spring break didn’t stop the Hubs track and field team from putting forward a dominant display in its dual meet with the Stillman Valley Cardinals on Tuesday. The Rochelle boys won nearly every event, and they propelled themselves to a 103-28 win over the Cardinals in their first outdoor meet of the season.

“It was a good start to the outdoor season,” head coach John Dobbs said. “We had a lot of personal bests in the field events, specifically the throws. Just about every guy had a personal best in the throws. The sprint relay handoffs were pretty good… It was a nice break from practice to have a meet and be able to compete.”

Senior Bazil Bennett anchored the Hubs in throwing events on Tuesday, winning both the discus (111 feet) and the shot put while recording a season-high heave of 46-10 in the shot put. Junior Greg Ricketts and senior Zach Miller took second and third in the shot put, respectively.

“I thought going into the season that Bazil had a chance of making it down to the state meet in the shot put and the discus,” Dobbs said. “He beat his personal record in the shot put by over 2 feet which was exciting. He’s starting to change his technique to a full spin instead of a glide, which helps because he’s fast.”

Junior Mason DeLille brought home two field event victories as well, clearing 5-2 in the high jump to finish first while leaping 17-8 in the long jump for first place. DeLille and freshman Trevor Goodwin tied for the top spot in the triple jump, with both Hubs recording leaps of 37-4.

All four relay teams took first place for Rochelle. The 3200-meter relay team clocked in at 10:11.00, and the 400-meter relay team finished first with a time of 49 seconds. The Hubs took first in the 800-meter relay at 1:42.00, and the 1600-meter relay landed the top spot with a time of 3:58.00.

Senior Austin Tracey ran the fastest 100-meter dash time in the meet, placing first in 12 seconds while junior Noah Knight ran the 200-meter dash in 25.2 seconds for first place. Sophomore Evan Horner took first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.5 seconds, and junior Connor Lenkaitis completed the 800-meter run in 2:28.00 for first place. Sophomore Tucker Louis won the 1600-meter run (5:38.00) and freshman Aiden Seldal took the 3200-meter run in 13:01.00.
