Quinonez wins 1600-meter run, Ricketts second in shot put

DEKALB — The Hubs varsity track and field team took third place in a triangular meet with DeKalb and Belvidere this past Saturday, with Rochelle scoring 35 points to Belvidere’s 49 and DeKalb’s 71.

Junior Noah Knight placed third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.53 seconds, while senior Bazil Bennett (7.22) took eighth place. Knight led Rochelle in the 200-meter dash (26.03) with senior Ben Pflipsen taking 10th (26.93) and sophomore Diego Escobar (26.99) finishing 12th. Junior Ryan Friestad (10.15) was Rochelle’s lone competitor in the 55-meter hurdles.

Junior Connor Lenkaitis ran the 400-meter dash in 59.24 to take second place, while sophomore Evan Horner (1:08.31) placed third and freshman Austen Farrell (1:10.98) finished fourth. Senior Andy Silva led the Hubs in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.12, while sophomore Gyvanziel Quinonez brought home Rochelle’s lone win in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:58.09.

Sophomore Santi Cordoba placed seventh in the 1600-meter run (5:35.78) and Cordoba was Rochelle’s only racer in the 3200-meter run (11:53.63). Rochelle’s 3200-meter relay team of Quinonez, Lenkaitis, Escobar and sophomore Ben Hickey finished third with a time of 9:47.29. The Hubs placed third in the 800-meter relay (1:45.38) behind junior Alex Louck, Knight, Pflipsen and junior Greg Ricketts.

Horner, Lenkaitis, Quinonez and Ricketts combined to take third in the 1600-meter relay. Hickey and freshman Dominic Williams tied for third place in the high jump at 5-4, while sophomore Aaron Vondergathen cleared 9-0 in the pole vault for third place.

Freshman Trevor Goodwin took seventh in the long jump (17-4) and Williams finished fifth in the triple jump (33-7.50). Ricketts (second with 41-10), Bennett (third with 41-2) and senior Zach Miller (40-9) all scored top-4 placements in the shot put.
