SYCAMORE — While the Lady Hubs were battling in the IHSA Class 2A Sectional at Genoa-Kingston High School, the Hubs varsity and fresh/soph track and field teams took on their conference rivals at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet in Sycamore, with the varsity squad taking eighth with 34 points and the fresh/soph boys placing ninth with five points.

Rochelle’s strongest effort of the evening came at the very end of the meet, when the 1600-meter relay group of seniors Matthew Drendel, Levi Johnson, Michael Drendel and sophomore Austin Walsh finished second with a time of 3:28.29. The Hubs took fourth in the 400-meter relay, with Matthew Drendel joining Walsh, Johnson and senior Lance Huftalin to run time of 44.25.

Huftalin was Rochelle’s top competitor in the open sprints, placing fifth in both the 100-meter dash (11.45) and the 200-meter dash (23.24). The sophomore Walsh clocked in at 52.09 in the 400-meter dash to finish fourth, and Johnson’s time of 41.31 in the 300-meter hurdles put him in fifth place. Senior Jake Rodriguez recorded the Hubs’ top time in the 110-meter hurdles, placing seventh with a time of 15.89.

Matthew Drendel turned in another stellar performance in the 800-meter run, finishing fourth with a time of 1:57.92. Freshman Santi Cordoba led the varsity squad in the 1600-meter run (5:08.08), while senior Spencer DiSimoni was Rochelle’s lone competitor in the 3200-meter run (10:49.75).

In the field events, senior Andrew Myers cleared 6-3 to finish third in the high jump, and junior Bazil Bennett locked down two top-12 places in the discus throw (11th with a mark of 117-11) and the shot put (seventh with a heave of 43-10). Michael Drendel’s height of 12-7 in the pole vault earned him fifth place, and junior Frantz Vardman recorded Rochelle’s best varsity leaps in the long jump (17 feet) and the triple jump (36-2 ½).

Fresh/Soph

Sophomore Dylan Finkboner totaled two top-10 finishes for the fresh/soph team, running a time of 19.20 in the 110-meter hurdles for ninth place and clocking in at 49.01 in the 300-meter hurdles for eighth place. Sophomore Jessee Infante and freshman Gyvanziel Quinonez ran side-by-side in the 3200-meter run, with Infante (10:44.29) placing fifth and Quinonez (10:52.77) taking sixth.
