Rochelle defeats Rockford Jefferson, Marquette Academy in four-team meet with Sandwich

ROCHELLE — The Hubs varsity wrestling team picked up two wins during its quad meet with Rockford Jefferson, Marquette Academy and Sandwich on Saturday. The Rochelle matmen topped both Jefferson and Marquette to open the meet before dropping a very close match with Sandwich. Rochelle is now 13-12 on the season.

Jefferson

Senior Austin Tracey opened Rochelle’s match with Jefferson by pinning Alvin Maton at 182 pounds. Seniors Alex Harvey and Bazil Bennett received forfeits at 195 and 220, respectively, before Hub sophomore Charlie Jandak won by fall over Seth Lane at 285 pounds.

Freshmen Ivan Pineda and Reese Kirk took forfeits at 106 and 113, respectively, while both Rochelle and Jefferson forfeited at 120 before Hub sophomore Keegan Davis picked up a forfeit at 126 pounds. Kevin Pierce defeated Rochelle senior Andy Silva by 10-4 decision at 132 pounds.

Senior Justin Hernandez added a forfeit win at 138 before Hub junior Eddie Villalobos won by fall at 145 pounds. Senior Ehren Metzger and sophomore Gavin Ansteth picked up forfeits at 152 and 160 before freshman Ben Harvey pinned Dante Leonard at 170 to seal the match. Rochelle defeated Jefferson 72-3.

Marquette

Alex Harvey made quick work of Keegan Jaros at 195, pinning him in 1:21 before Hunter McAlpine won by fall over Bennett at 220. Rochelle then picked up five straight forfeits courtesy of junior Nick Henson (285), Pineda (106), Kirk (113), freshman Grant Thompson (120) and Davis (126).

Silva gave Rochelle a 42-6 lead when he pinned Sam McGrath in 1:35 at 132 pounds. Hernandez (138) and junior Jacob Fore (145) received forfeits before Metzger won by fall over Brenton Sampson in 1:20 at 152 and Ansteth pinned Jake Mitchell in 5:00 at 160. Ben Harvey (170) and Tracey (182) took forfeits to seal Rochelle’s 78-6 win over Marquette.

Sandwich

Junior Brandon Johnson pinned O’Ryan Lawler in 30 seconds at 220 to give Rochelle the lead over Sandwich, and Henson earned a forfeit to extend the Hub advantage. But after Justin Avery pinned Pineda at 106 and Tyler Schindlbeck won by fall over Kirk at 113, the match was tied 12-12.

Cade Schindlbeck won by 10-3 decision over Thompson at 120, but Davis defeated Adrian Mendoza by 17-3 major decision at 126 to give Rochelle a 16-15 lead. Silva beat Eddie Brown by 8-2 decision at 132 before Jacob Newberry earned an injury forfeit over Hernandez at 138. Villalobos topped Dylan Limon by 15-4 major decision at 145.

Metzger’s 9-5 decision over Jackson Murphy at 152 put Rochelle ahead 27-22 before Marc Hernandez pinned Ansteth at 160 and Zach Reyes edged Ben Harvey by 3-1 sudden victory at 170. Wyatt Murphy slipped past Tracey by 3-2 decision at 182, and even though Alex Harvey pinned Braden Mansur at 195, the Hubs fell just short by a final score of 34-33.
