Rochelle grapplers bump record up to 11-10 overall

DEKALB — The Hubs varsity wrestling team competed in six dual matches over two days at DeKalb High School’s Don Flavin Invitational this past weekend, with the Rochelle grapplers going 3-3 in the tournament to bump their overall record up to 11-10 on the season. The Hubs will face Sycamore on Friday before battling Sandwich, Rockford Jefferson and Marquette Academy on Saturday.

Wheaton North

Rochelle opened the tournament on Friday with a 51-22 loss against Wheaton North. Freshman Ben Harvey won his 170-pound bout over Collin Rosenberry by 9-1 major decision, while senior Alex Harvey earned a 17-0 technical fall over Antwan Tolbert at 195 pounds. Senior Justin Hernandez defeated Nick Lemp at 132 pounds by 14-6 major decision, and junior Eddie Villalobos edged Sam Chesney by 5-4 decision at 138 pounds.

Joliet

The Hubs came closer to victory in their second Friday dual match, but the Rochelle matmen fell to Joliet by a final score of 35-27. Both Harvey brothers won by fall, while senior Austin Tracey brought home a 9-6 decision win over Ke’Andre Wiley at 182 pounds. Junior Nick Henson defeated David Diaz by fall at 285 pounds, and both Hernandez (3-1 decision over Mario Leon) and Villalobos (8-3 decision over Jon Garcia) were victorious in their respective matches.

Johnsburg

Rochelle finished the Friday portion of tournament action with a 51-27 victory over Johnsburg to claim seventh place in the Terry McCoy Bracket. Sophomore Bryan Garza won by 6-4 decision over Fred Fuchs at 182 pounds, and several Hubs earned forfeits including senior Bazil Bennett, sophomore Charlie Jandak and freshmen Ivan Pineda and Reese Kirk. Sophomore Keegan Davis and both Hernandez and Villalobos also recorded forfeit wins.

Harlem

The Hubs began Saturday’s competition in Pool C with a 46-27 victory over Harlem. Tracey defeated Collin Howe by fall at 182 pounds, and Kirk won over Mya Turnmire by disqualification at 106 pounds. Freshman Grant Thompson recorded a 5-1 decision win over Jackson Cross at 120 pounds, and Ben Harvey finished the dual with a pin of Riley Derry at 170. Bennett, Henson and Alex Harvey earned forfeits, and both Hernandez (15-5 major decision over Kyetin Lindquist) and Villalobos (11-4 decision over Preston Schuelke) were winners.

Crystal Lake South

Rochelle defeated Crystal Lake South 45-30 in its second Saturday dual match. Alex Harvey won by fall over James Moore at 195, and Thompson earned a forfeit at 120 before Hernandez beat Bardia Amin by fall at 132 and Villalobos topped K.T. Siversten by fall at 138. Sophomore Diego Escobar took a forfeit at 145 pounds before sophomore Gavin Ansteth won by 7-4 decision over Tadd Mears at 160 and both Ben Harvey and Tracey took forfeits.

York

The Hubs ended the tournament on Saturday with a 45-30 loss to York. Thompson won by fall over Joe Mayor at 120, and Hernandez toughed out a 5-4 decision win over Antonio Gutierrez at 132. Villalobos defeated Ryan Costello by fall at 138 before Ben Harvey rallied to beat Zach Armstrong by 5-3 decision at 170. Tracey pinned Ben Fett at 182 and Alex Harvey won by fall over Steven Blake at 195.
