Harvey, Villalobos finish first for Rochelle matmen

ROCKFORD — The Hubs varsity wrestling team placed third out of 13 schools at the Rockford East Giardini Invitational this past Saturday, with two Rochelle grapplers earning top finishes during the event including senior Alex Harvey (7-0) and junior Eddie Villalobos (8-0).

Harvey took first place at 195 pounds, winning by fall over Zion-Benton’s Julian Johnson (9-5) in the semifinals before recording another fall victory over Geneseo’s Ethan McKelvain (3-1) for the championship. Villalobos totaled a 13-2 major decision over Rockford East’s Soe Lwin (2-4) before defeating LaSalle-Peru’s Luke Burris (4-2) in the 152-pound semifinals by 6-2 decision and Metamora’s Connor Bernitt (3-2) by 13-5 major decision for the title.

Three Rochelle wrestlers took second place in their respective brackets including seniors Justin Hernandez (7-1), Ehren Metzger (6-2) and Bazil Bennett (6-2). Hernandez won by 17-6 major decision over Metamora’s Austin Zalar (3-1) before beating Metamora’s Brayden Smith (3-2) by 23-8 technical fall in the 138-pound semifinals. Hernandez fell to Geneseo’s Andrew Rizzo (5-0) by 5-2 decision for the title.

Metzger recorded two fall wins over St. Charles North’s Lorenzo Filippelli (1-2) and Metamora’s Vinny Querciagrossa (4-1) at 160 pounds before falling by 4-3 decision to Zion-Benton’s Jordan Chisum (11-3). Bennett earned fall victories over Metamora’s Ethan Mierra (3-4) and Zion-Benton’s Ulysses Woodard (8-6) before losing to Kaneland’s Calvin McDonald (8-1) by fall.

Sophomore Keegan Davis (6-3) finished third at 126 pounds, picking up wins over Jose Lopez (0-2) and Metamora’s Logan Fitz (2-2) before falling to LaSalle-Peru’s Ashton Kellett (5-1). Davis won by technical fall over Jordy Llanos (2-2) for third place. Senior Austin Tracey (7-3) took fifth at 182 pounds, winning by fall over Zion-Benton’s Osbaldo Garcia (5-9) before losing by 8-5 decision to Kaneland’s Trevor Jones (8-1). Tracey defeated Lucas Scott (0-2) and Anthony Ruiz (0-2) in wrestlebacks before pinning Geneseo’s Eli Allen (1-4) for fifth.

Freshman Grant Thompson (5-4) and junior Will Jandak (4-2) each finished sixth at their respective weights, with Thompson recording 120-pound wins over Andre Colbert (1-2), Miguel Matute (0-2) and Marco Santos (2-2). Jandak defeated Freeport’s Isaiah Batteast (5-3) and Zion-Benton’s Emmanuel Acosta (8-5) at 285 pounds.
