ROCHELLE — James “Jim” Peters, 92, passed away at his home on Nov. 13, 2020. He was born on Sept. 9, 1928, the son of Russel and Margaret Peters. He married L. Christine Stone on Nov. 19, 1949 in Rochelle; she preceded him on March 16, 2000. He then married Sue Lawson on July 20, 2003. 

Jim owned and operated Peters GMC in Rochelle. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia Colby; and two sons, Gary and Thomas Peters.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Tebala Shrine, the Rochelle Masonic Lodge, Golden K and Tres Dias. He enjoyed traveling in their RV and spending time with his family.

Jim was a fireman for 42 years with the Rochelle Fire Department, retiring as assistant chief.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Peters; two sons, Rev. David (Jacalyn) Peters of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Joseph (Dawn) Peters of Rochelle; two stepchildren, Kim (Randall) Salsbury of Rochelle, and Kent (Terri) Lawson of Danville, Calif.; eight grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald (Peggy) Peters of Homosassa, Florida.

A private family memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, 2020 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Doug Forsberg officiating. The service will be live streamed on the Unger Horner Facebook Page for you to virtually attend. A public walk-through opportunity to pay your respects to Jim will be held at the Unger Horner Funeral Home on Thursday, Nov. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. with Jim’s urn and memorabilia present, but due to Covid restrictions, there will be no family to greet.

Memorials can be made to the Rochelle Fire Department, First Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge or Golden K.
