FLORIDA — Jeffrey David Austin, born June 7, 1944 in New York, 73, passed away May 6, 2018 in Florida.
A dentist for 45 years, “Doc” Austin was proud of serving generations of patients at his practice in Rochelle. He graduated with a BS from Michigan State in 1967 and the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry in 1971 and was a lifelong member of the Chicago and American Dental Society.
At dental school, he won an award of merit as the best technical student in his class. He felt so lucky to have a career he excelled at, loved, and had wanted since he was seven.
Jeff was also a passionate pilot, sailor, target shooter and dog owner. He loved anything with an engine and the north woods of Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Molly and Joe Austin; and brother, Steven Austin.
He leaves his beloved wife of 20 years, Joyce O’Neill Austin; his children, Lyrah Austin Bushnell and Bryce Austin; grandchildren, Liam and Kellen; and his stepdaughter, Annette Vee and her children.
He will also be missed by many others, especially his lifelong friends Elise Burger and Fred Isley, and his dogs Walker and Connor.
By his choice, his body has been donated to his dental school alma mater and his chosen gravestone reads, “Beyond my wildest expectations, I’d take the trip again.”
A Celebration of Life will be held June 24 at Salt 251, IL Route 251 South, 531 S. 7th St., Rochelle. An open house and refreshments will be served from 3 to 6 p.m. At 4 p.m., memories and reminiscences from family and friends will be held.
