ROCHELLE — With a spot in the Rochelle Little League Major League Championship on the line, No. 2 seed Firemen and No. 3 seed Kiwanis Club turned in arguably the best game of the postseason Wednesday evening, with the underdogs pulling off the first upset of the tournament.

Entering the bottom of the sixth inning with a three-run lead, Kiwanis Club surrendered two runs to Firemen, but the team held on long enough to earn the victory by a score of 6-5. Kiwanis Club (9-7) will meet No. 1 seed VFW (16-0) in a three-game championship series beginning Monday, June 26.

Kiwanis Club took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Braden Behrens walked and scored on a single by Lucas Smardo. Firemen (8-7) responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, taking advantage of four Kiwanis Club errors to take a 2-1 lead. Ethan Goodwin and Aidan Rodriguez crossed home plate for the No. 2 seed.

Josh Lloyd and Brandon Moody singled to begin the third inning, with Grant Messer walking and Breydan Lowery reaching on a hit-by-pitch to make it a 2-2 game. Wade Smith also reached on a hit-by-pitch to give Kiwanis Club a 3-2 lead, and two more runners scored to give Kiwanis Club a 5-2 advantage.

Firemen scored two runs over the next two innings, while Kiwanis Club added one in the fifth inning to hold a 6-3 lead entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Two Firemen players scored, but the team’s rally came up just short.
