Lady Hub doubles teams shine in Dixon tennis match

Posted

ROCHELLE — It was something you couldn’t plan if it you tried.
At the exact moment, Jordin Dickey and RuthAnne Gardner captured the final point to win the No. 3 doubles match against the Dixon High School girls’ tennis team Monday afternoon, Melanie Gonzalez and Emma Hicks were winning the No. 2 doubles match.
“Besides winning at the same time, we also had the same scores,” Hicks said.
Both teams won 6-3, 6-2.
“No, we didn’t plan it,” Rochelle Township High School varsity coach Lizzie Cartwright laughed. “It was just a coincidence.”
The matches were the only two the Lady Hubs won as they fell to the visitors, 3-2.
Sawyer McGee and MeLisa Young dropped the No. 1 doubles match, 6-1, 6-0.
In singles play, Caitln McMurray lost at No. 1, 6-1, 6-0, and Anna Guevara lost at No. 2, 6-0, 6-2.
“Everyone played their best, so I’m happy,” Cartwright said.

“I think we did pretty well,” Gonzalez said.
“We were more aggressive at the net and that helped us win a lot of points,” Hicks added.
Both girls said it helps to win the first set in a two out of three match.
“I feel we are more confident, but we still have to focus so we don’t get in over our heads,” Gonzalez said.
Despite the win, not everyone thought it was their best performance.
“It’s good to get the win,” Dickey said, “but I think we could have gotten more points.”
“I think we could have played better,” Gardner agreed.
Despite appearing very calm on the court with her rather laid-back style, Gardner admitted she still gets a little tense at times.
“We keep it on the inside,” she said. “We have to make them think we’re not worried.”
Rochelle won the junior varsity match, 3-2.
According to long-time coach Jeff Truckenbrod, since it was a non-conference match, the event was held in an all-doubles format.
For Rochelle, Haley Miller and Ella Seebach won the No. 3 match, 8-2; Lauren Jackson and Francesa Williams were victorious at No. 4, 8-3; and Riley Flanagan and Abby Tarvestad won No. 3, 8-1.
Margo DaCosta and Ashley Knight won the No. 1 singles, 8-6, while Avri Olsen sand Azanbeth Milan lost at No. 2, 8-1.
Sycamore loss
On Tuesday, the Lady Hubs traveled to Sycamore and lost 5-0.
No. 1 singles player McMurray lost 6-0, 6-0, while Guevara won one game in her 6-1, 6-0 defeat in No. 2 singles.
Dickey and Young were defeated 6-1, 6-0 and Gardner and McGee fell 6-0, 6-3 in No. 2 doubles play.
Gonzalez and Hicks fell 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3 doubles play.
