FORRESTON — Rochelle junior Abby Lundquist wasn’t able to find much shooting space over her first two games of the varsity basketball season, but Lundquist made several shots fall when the Lady Hubs took on Forreston this past Saturday in the third round of the Forreston Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Lady Hubs made 40.3 percent of their field goals as a team, with Lundquist going 9-for-19 including 4-of-5 from the 3-point line and scoring 26 points to lead all Rochelle players. Senior Morgan Baker added 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting, and the purple and white were able to lock down the victory, winning by a final score of 64-56.

“I think [Abby] was able to relax a little bit,” head coach Tony Rowan said. “She was having fun playing basketball, and for our players it comes down to whether basketball feels like work or like fun. We’re trying to find ways for the kids to excel when they’re having fun, and I think Abby was having fun on Saturday.”

Rochelle held a slim 13-12 lead after the first quarter before Forreston jumped ahead 28-26 at halftime. While much of the action came from a few of the Lady Hubs over their first two games of the tournament, Rowan said the Rochelle girls found more balance against the Lady Cardinals.

“I think balance is a pretty good word to describe the game,” Rowan said. “Opposing teams have been coming out and knocking down shots on us, but we had 3 or 4 players scoring throughout the game and we were able to mix things up offensively and defensively as far as our sets and our strategies. The kids played extremely well.”

With Lundquist and Baker carrying much of the scoring load, senior Jacie Wyatt went to work in the paint, scoring 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting with five steals and eight rebounds including four offensive boards. Wyatt has statistically been Rochelle’s most efficient player this season, and Rowan said he’ll be giving Wyatt a steady workload as the year progresses.

“I think Jacie’s in a good rhythm,” Rowan said. “She’s been limited a little bit by foul trouble, and that’s because we put her in situations where she has to guard 6-foot or 6-foot-2-inch girls and she’s trying to bang with them. We’re going to try and limit her fouls, and the more time she’s on the floor, the more time she’ll be able to score.”

The Lady Hubs took over the lead in the third quarter, outscoring Forreston 22-16 to enter the fourth quarter up 48-44 before outscoring the Lady Cardinals again 16-12. The win bumps Rochelle up to 1-2 on the season.
