DIXON — The Lady Hubs varsity basketball team split a pair of games on Friday, falling to Sterling by a score of 60-48 in the morning before topping Newman Central Catholic 43-39 in the afternoon to wrap up Dixon’s KSB Holiday Classic. The two games bump Rochelle’s overall record up to 7-9 on the season.
Sterling
Junior Abby Lundquist led the Lady Hubs with 28 points on 8-of-18 shooting against the Golden Warriors Friday morning. Rochelle trailed Sterling 27-23 at halftime before slicing into its opponent’s lead after three quarters, with the Golden Warriors up 40-38. Senior Cesca Vardman added nine points, while seniors Morgan Baker and Jacie Wyatt combined for 11 points in the loss.
“Abby had another great game but we couldn’t rise to the challenge of beating their bigs,” head coach Tony Rowan said. “They extended possessions with offensive boards that we couldn’t grab.”
Newman
While the Lady Hubs had three points taken away from their lead in the fourth quarter of Friday afternoon’s game, the Rochelle girls held on to record their first victory of the tournament. Lundquist scored a team-high 23 points for the Lady Hubs, while Wyatt added 10 points and nine rebounds.
“We had momentum going throughout each of our last three games, but we weren’t able to cap them off,” Rowan said. “We were able to finish this one off with a win. The girls were sticking together.”
