ROCHELLE — The Lady Hubs varsity bowling team will look much different without seniors Carlie Elder and Katie Dummer in Rochelle uniforms, but head coach Joey Johanning is aiming to rebuild the program’s depth after the two four-year standouts exit high school.
Rochelle finished 3-11 this season with wins over Ottawa, Streator and Kaneland. The Lady Hubs placed eighth at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Meet and seventh at the IHSA Regional in DeKalb.
Dummer recently wrapped up her season at the IHSA State Meet this past weekend, and the three-time sectional qualifier and two-time All-Conference bowler will be dearly missed.
“We saw changes in her physical game and she had the ability to move inside the lane which is a big must,” Johanning said. “When the lanes dry out you have to adjust, and the work Katie put in over the last four years allowed her to do that.”
Elder is departing the program having reached sectional four times in her high school career in addition to earning two All-Conference honors. Johanning credited Elder’s leadership and work ethic as the two biggest areas he saw Elder improve throughout her time at Rochelle.
“We’ll definitely miss her leadership and it was awesome watching her grow from her first year to where she is now,” Johanning said. “She definitely put in a lot of work and that was evidenced by making it past regionals four times. It’s going to be a tough loss for us.”
Rochelle will also lose seniors Hunter Eckhardt, Hope Palmer and junior foreign exchange student Anne Langer. With only three girls eligible to return including juniors Autumn Headon, Aubrey Headon and freshman Noelle Griner, Johanning is eager to encourage high-schoolers to try out for the girls bowling program.
“Autumn has been a good leader-by-example,” Johanning said. “There are usually a couple of girls who come in and want to give bowling a shot, and we definitely encourage any girls who’s interested to come on out. I’ve never cut a girl who was there in her first year because we want to foster confidence.”
