GENOA — The Lady Hubs varsity cross country team finished third in the Genoa-Kingston Matt Walter Invitational last season, and the girls performed even better this time around, placing second out of eight schools Tuesday evening while turning in their best team results of the season.
Rochelle (83 points) edged out Richmond-Burton (87 points) for second place, with junior Katherine Bakken leading the way for the Lady Hubs, taking second out of 65 finishers with a time of 19:27.0. Bakken was one of three Rochelle runners to medal on Tuesday, as seniors Hannah Cruz (13th in 21:11.0) and Claire Plapp (14th in 21:12.0) also received awards for their times.
Junior Anne Hickey finished 25th with a time of 22:03.0 to record Rochelle’s fourth top-25 placement in the 3-mile girls race, while senior Rhylie Erdman (31st in 22:25.0) and sophomore Britney Baez (35th in 22:39.0) also turned in strong performances for the Lady Hubs. Senior Morgan Baker placed 33rd with a time of 22:27.0.
The Hubs varsity cross country team beat out North Boone in a tiebreaker for sixth place, with sophomore Santi Cordoba recording Rochelle’s top placement of 29th out of 59 finishers in 18:02.0. Sophomore Uzziel Zarate placed 31st with a time of 18:12.0, while sophomores Tucker Louis (35th in 18:40.0) and Diego Escobar (39th in 19:18.0) also cracked the top 40 on Tuesday.
Rochelle will return to action at the Freeport Invitational on Saturday before racing in the Sterling Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 7.
