ROCHELLE — When the Lady Hubs varsity softball team battled the Mendota Lady Trojans in nonconference action this past Saturday at Rochelle Township High School, the girls did something they haven’t done since April 1.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the purple and white scored three times to take a two-run lead entering the top of the seventh, and the girls held Mendota down one final time to win by a score of 4-2, the team’s first victory since defeating Genoa-Kingston just over one month ago.

The Lady Trojans totaled 16 hits in the game to Rochelle’s seven, but they were unable to cash in when they needed to the most. Two costly errors set Mendota back as well, while the Lady Hubs went the whole game without committing one.

Senior Christina Payton and junior Jessie Meyers went 2-for-3 in the win, with Payton driving in one run. Senior Paige Myroth and juniors Britney Salinas and Alyssa Stechsculte each totaled one hit, while senior Jaelyn Kammes aided the Lady Hub offense with a sacrifice fly.

Both Rochelle and Mendota scored one run in the first inning, with the Lady Trojans striking again in the second to take a 2-1 lead. But Lady Hub senior pitcher Jenna Feltes settled in after that, holding Mendota scoreless for the rest of her time on the mound. Feltes also picked up the win, which bumps the team’s record up to 2-15 overall.

The girls will play at DeKalb on Tuesday before returning home to face Sterling on Thursday.
