Fulgencio, Monfils earn doubles win in 4-1 team loss

DEKALB — Rochelle senior Lillian Fulgencio and sophomore Kate Monfils combined to bring home the Lady Hubs varsity tennis team’s first point of the 2017 season when the girls traveled to DeKalb High School on Wednesday for a Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference match against the Barbs.

Fulgencio and Monfils defeated DeKalb’s No. 2 doubles pair of Lorena Robles and Holly Young by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to put Rochelle on the board Wednesday evening. But the Lady Hubs were unable to collect any more wins, and the Barbs went on to win the match by a final team score of 4-1.

DeKalb took both singles points, with Hui Zhu taking down Rochelle senior Alex Nava in No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-2) and Helene Collin winning over Lady Hub senior Jasmin Galvan by a score of 6-4, 6-3. The Barbs earned two of the three doubles points available, with Josephine Hoppenworth and Joy Ngum defeating Lady Hub seniors Raquel Montelongo and Marissa Belmonte at No. 1 doubles in three sets (6-2, 6-7, 6-3).

DeKalb’s Dasjha Eguasa and Hannah Mooberry took down Rochelle junior Lila Roush and senior Anahi Calderon 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. The Lady Hubs drop to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play with the loss, and they will face Belvidere on the road Thursday evening.

Ruth Gardner and Caitlin McMurray picked up Rochelle’s lone point in the junior varsity team’s 4-1 loss to DeKalb on Wednesday. The girls defeated Addie Lopez and Maha Alkarzon at No. 2 doubles by a score of 6-4, 6-3.

Mindy Pelayo and Paige Rowland took the court in singles for the Lady Hubs, with Pelayo falling at No. 1 singles (2-6, 0-6) and Rowland going down at No. 2 singles (0-6, 0-6). Jasmine Rissman and Ashlynn Leininger lost at No. 1 doubles (0-6, 5-7), while Melanie Gonzalez and Elena Pelayo fell 3-6, 4-6 at No. 3 doubles.
