ROCHELLE — The Lady Hubs varsity tennis team is still seeking its first victory of the 2017 season, but head coach Lizzie Cartwright said the Rochelle girls have improved since the beginning of the new school year.

Junior Lila Roush and sophomore Kate Monfils teamed up to bring home Rochelle’s lone victory against the Dixon Duchesses on Monday, defeating Kailey Woolard and Nicole Starksdale by a score of 6-3, 6-2. The Lady Hubs were unable to earn any other wins, falling by a score of 4-1, but Cartwright said the program is taking steps in the right direction despite the loss.

“They are improving all of their skills,” Cartwright said. “We’re still having challenges winning the games… The scores get pretty close and we end up losing by a deuce or something like that. We’re still working on getting the job done.”

The Lady Hubs shuffled their lineup around for Monday’s nonconference match, with senior Marissa Belmonte taking the court at No. 1 singles and senior Raquel Montelongo battling in No. 2 singles. Belmonte fell to Dixon’s Alane Bratt (0-6, 1-6), while Montelongo lost to Riley Bally, 0-6, 0-6.

Seniors Jasmin Galvan and Alex Nava switched over to No. 1 doubles on Monday, falling to Dixon players Alexis Sneek and Allison Bey by a score of 4-6, 2-6. Seniors Lillian Fulgencio and Anahi Calderon dropped their match to Adela Bajramoska and Paige Colby by a score of 0-6, 1-6 to round out the varsity matches.

“It’s great to have a bigger team,” Cartwright said. “I think it’s more fun for the girls to get to know other people at their school and build new relationships with each other. All of our varsity players have done a very great job developing and working toward getting better.”

The Lady Hubs will continue their season at LaSalle-Peru on Tuesday before hosting the Sterling Golden Warriors on Thursday. Rochelle’s junior varsity tennis team lost 4-1 to Dixon, with freshman Mindy Pelayo winning her match at No. 1 singles, 10-8.
