Roush, Monfils earn match victory in No. 3 doubles

ROCHELLE — The Rochelle varsity tennis team hosted its annual Lady Hub Invitational this past Saturday, with the purple and white finishing fifth out of five schools including DeKalb, Kaneland, Freeport and Newman Central Catholic.

Senior Alex Nava placed fifth at No. 1 singles, falling to Kaneland’s Piper Schrepferman (2-6, 2-6) before dropping two-set match to DeKalb’s Hui Zhu (3-6, 2-6). Nava rested in the third round before facing Freeport’s Jasmine Bigelow (2-6, 2-6 loss) and Newman’s Avery Meyer (2-6, 2-6 loss).

Senior Jasmin Galvan took fifth place at No. 2 singles, playing two close matches to start the day but falling to Newman’s Sydney Schott (2-6, 2-6) and Kaneland’s Lauren Zablock (4-6, 4-6). Galvan dropped another 4-6, 4-6 match to DeKalb’s Dajha Eguusa before earning a bye in the fourth round and falling to Freeport’s Andreia Marshall (4-6, 4-6) in the fifth round.

Seniors Raquel Montelongo and Marissa Belmonte took the court in No. 1 doubles, taking fifth place. The girls fell to DeKalb’s Helene Collin and Izi Meyers Miller (2-6, 4-6) in the first round before losing 2-6, 2-6 to Freeport’s Lauren Castle and Kaitlyn Williams. Montelongo and Belmonte dropped each of their next two matches, falling to Kaneland’s Kaitlyn Becker and Madie Jurasek (2-6, 2-6) and Newman’s Erin Vits and Maddy Jacobs (2-6, 2-6).

Seniors Lillian Fulgencio and Anahi Calderon battled in No. 2 doubles for Rochelle, finishing fifth overall. The girls fell to Freeport’s Katie Noble and Alyse Eshleman (3-6, 3-6) in the first round before resting in the second round. Fulgencio and Calderon lost three matches after the bye round, falling to Kaneland’s Haley Plach and Ingrid Napiorkowski (2-6, 2-6), Newman’s Audrey Melton and Chloe Klein (2-6, 2-6) and DeKalb’s Dennysha Kizer and Josie Hoppenworth (3-6, 3-6).

Junior Lila Roush and sophomore Kate Monfils rounded out the Lady Hubs varsity tennis team on Saturday, finishing fifth at No. 3 doubles. The girls lost 4-6, 4-6 to Newman’s Emily Schaab and Madelyn Ryan, but they earned Rochelle’s lone win by defeating Freeport’s Elizabeth Goldie and Amiah Misek 6-7 (7-5), 7-5, 10-5. Roush and Monfils lost 4-6, 5-7 to DeKalb’s Joy Ngum and Hannah Mooberry before falling 2-6, 2-6 to Kaneland’s Ava Mandele and Christel Lamera.
