ROCHELLE — Juniors Ashlynn Leininger and Jasmine Rissman stepped up for the Lady Hubs varsity tennis team Monday evening, winning their match at No. 3 doubles and helping Rochelle earn two points against the Streator Lady Bulldogs.
Leininger and Rissman defeated Streator’s Jennifer Berry and Wendy Berry by a score of 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles, and Rochelle senior Jasmin Galvan outlasted Lady Bulldog Maya Durdan (4-6, 6-4, 10-8) in No. 1 singles. The Lady Hubs recorded two match points for the first time this season, but Streator walked away victorious by a final score of 3-2.
Senior Alex Nava fell to Streator’s Kaitlyn Sopko (4-6, 3-6) at No. 1 singles, while seniors Raquel Montelongo and Lillian Fulgencio played a close match with Yolanda Cerda and Yaminia DeLeon before losing 5-7, 4-6 in No. 1 doubles. Senior Anahi Calderon and junior Lila Roush fell to Lyndsey Arevalo and Aleaha Evans 3-6, 1-6 at No. 2 doubles.
Rochelle will return to action against Geneseo on Tuesday.
Fresh-Soph
The Rochelle freshmen and sophomores teamed up to take fifth out of eight schools in the Princeton Fresh-Soph Invitational this past Saturday, with sophomore Kate Monfils finishing seventh at No. 1 singles and freshman Mindy Pelayo taking fifth at No. 2 singles.
Sophomores Paige Rowland and Ruth Gardner placed fifth at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Caitlin McMurray and freshman Melanie Gonzalez took seventh in No. 2 doubles. Rochelle totaled 12 points in the tournament.
