Little League: 11U Baseball All-Stars battle at state tournament

Rochelle finishes 1-2 with win over Champaign East

CHAMPAIGN — The Rochelle Little League 11U Baseball All-Stars scored a 7-4 win against Champaign East in the first round of the Illinois Little League State Championship tournament on Saturday. Rochelle earned a second-round matchup against Hinsdale with the victory.

Quentin Ansteth delivered an RBI single to score Vaughn Manning and give Rochelle a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After Champaign East answered with one run in the bottom of the first inning, Rochelle surged ahead when Joey Chadwick scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning. Champaign East fought back with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Rochelle’s offense ignited for five runs with two outs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead. Manning fueled the rally with an RBI single to third base, scoring Joey Chadwick and tying the score at 3-3. Mikey Chadwick then reached on an error, allowing Nolan Zick to score and put Rochelle ahead. With his team leading 5-3 after Sergio Cervantes scored on a wild pitch, Teddy Millard belted a two-RBI single to right field, bringing Manning and Chadwick home.

Champaign East scratched one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but a flyout sealed the win for the Rochelle All-Stars. Declan McKinney started on the mound, throwing four innings while striking out five batters and allowing only one earned run. Ansteth and Gabe Bybee tossed the final two innings for the Rochelle All-Stars, with Ansteth striking out two batters in the win. 

Hinsdale

The Rochelle Little League 11U Baseball All-Stars suffered their first loss of the Illinois Little League State Championship tournament on Sunday, falling 15-0 against Hinsdale to move into the consolation bracket. Rochelle will continue the tournament on Monday against Elmhurst.

Elmhurst

The Rochelle Little League 11U Baseball All-Stars saw their Illinois Little League State Championship run conclude Monday evening with a 17-2 loss against Elmhurst. The Rochelle All-Stars finished with a 2-3 overall postseason record and 1-2 record at the state tournament.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Rochelle tied the score when Quentin Ansteth smacked an RBI single into right field to bring Vaughn Manning home. Elmhurst tallied three runs in the top of the second inning before adding two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to surge ahead 8-1. Rochelle scored its second run of the game during the bottom of the fifth inning, where Manning belted an RBI double to right field that allowed Elijah Good to score.

Elmhurst sealed its win with nine runs in the top of the sixth inning. Manning went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI to lead the Rochelle offense, while Ansteth and Maddex Jackson each went 1-for-3 at the plate. Ansteth threw three innings as the starter, striking out two batters.
