Little League: 12U Baseball All-Stars begin sectional tournament

Rochelle splits Saturday games against Oglesby, Moline

ROCHELLE — The Rochelle Little League 12U Baseball All-Stars hosted the Illinois Little League Sectional Championship tournament over the weekend, splitting two games against Oglesby and Moline on Saturday. Rochelle fell 4-2 against Oglesby in the afternoon before bouncing back with a 10-6 win over Moline during the evening to clinch a berth in the finals.


Bo Lundquist started on the mound for the Rochelle All-Stars, throwing four innings and striking out six batters while holding Oglesby to three hits. Dayton Mellor entered in relief for the final two innings, adding one strikeout and not allowing any hits or runs. Luke Chadwick went 2-for-3 to lead the Rochelle offense, while Danny Garcia doubled and totaled two RBIs in the game.

Oglesby gained the early lead, scoring one run in the top of the first inning before tallying two more runs in the top of the second inning. Trailing 4-0 after Oglesby added one run in the top of the fourth inning, Rochelle avoided the shutout in the bottom of the fourth inning, where Garcia’s two-RBI double to center field brought Eli Schweitzer and John Williams home. Chadwick and Lundquist each singled in the fifth inning, but the Rochelle All-Stars were unable to score.


Jace Spears threw a complete game for the Rochelle All-Stars against Moline, totaling six innings with five strikeouts while going 2-for-3 with two runs scored at the plate. Bo Lundquist went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs to lead the offense, while Eli Schweitzer went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Luke Chadwick went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks drawn.

Moline took the early lead, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning before Rochelle fired back with six runs in the bottom of the second inning. Spears doubled to lead off the frame and scored on an RBI groundout from John Williams for Rochelle’s first run of the game. Dayton Mellor ripped an RBI single to left during the next at-bat to bring Bentley Svela home.

Trailing 4-2, Rochelle tied the game after Lundquist belted a two-RBI double to left field, allowing Mellor and Riley Smith to come home. Schweitzer stepped up with a two-out, two-RBI single two batters later, plating Chadwick and Lundquist and giving Rochelle the 6-4 lead. Moline tallied one run in the top of the third inning, but an RBI double from Lundquist and RBI singles from Brayden Harley and Svela made the score 9-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Danny Garcia brought the final run home for the Rochelle All-Stars, hitting a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Moline hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning, but two strikeouts and a groundout allowed the Rochelle All-Stars to emerge with the win.
