ROCK FALLS — The Rochelle 8-10 Boys All-Star baseball team is headed to the sub state tournament next week after its 9-4 victory over Freeport on Friday night.
Rochelle won all three of its district games and Friday’s victory advances the team to the Moline Sub State Tournament, which is a round robin format. Rochelle had a couple of early chances to score in the first two innings but left some runners on base.
Freeport took a 1-0 lead after pushing home a run on an error and a wild pitch, but Rochelle came right back and tied the game in the third inning and then pulled away to build an 8-1 lead after the fifth.
Freeport chipped away at the lead in the sixth inning and cut the lead to 8-4 before Rochelle closed the door to lock down the win and District 19 championship. Trent Cunningham led Rochelle with two extra-base hits and four RBI, while Bobby Tourdot chipped in with three base hits for the winners.
Warren Schweitzer pitched for Rochelle and was in full control, pitching four and two thirds innings and allowing no hits while striking out 13 Freeport batters. Rochelle’s first game in the sub state tournament will be held Friday at 5:30 p.m. The team will then play Saturday at noon and again Sunday at noon.
