ROCK FALLS — The Rochelle Little League Junior League All-Stars fell just short in the finals of the Illinois Little League District 19 Championship tournament on Saturday. Rochelle held the late lead, but four unanswered runs allowed Freeport to rally back and win 5-4. Caden Goodwin went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Rochelle All-Stars, who went 2-2 in the district tournament.
Freeport struck first, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. Rochelle evened the score in the bottom of the second inning, where Goodwin reached on an infield single before coming around and scoring on an error. Bobby Tourdot and Jonathan Andrist opened the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back singles, which led to an RBI groundout from Goodwin that gave the Rochelle All-Stars a 2-1 lead. Andrist then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-1.
Goodwin delivered in the bottom of the fifth inning for Rochelle, sending an RBI infield single to the shortstop that allowed Connor Hunley to score. Freeport rallied in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs on three walks, two hits and one error to regain the lead 5-4. Rochelle opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk and a single, but three outs, including one out at home, over the next two at-bats ended the scoring threat. Rochelle totaled six hits in the game.
