Little League: Senior League All-Stars conclude state tournament run

The Rochelle Little League Senior League All-Stars went 3-2 over five games at the Illinois Little League State Championship tournament in Burbank. Rochelle splits Sunday games against South Elgin, East Side

BURBANK — The Rochelle Little League Senior League All-Stars saw their run at the Illinois Little League State Championship tournament conclude Sunday evening. After defeating South Elgin 13-3 in the afternoon, Rochelle faced Chicago East Side for a berth in the state finals, falling 9-0 to finish the tournament with a 3-2 record. Rochelle went 5-2 in postseason play.

South Elgin

Rochelle took the early lead against South Elgin, with Evan Stinnett sending an RBI single into left field during the top of the second inning to make the score 1-0. Back-to-back doubles from Ethan Goodwin and Ryan Senne ignited the Rochelle offense in the top of the third inning, with Senne’s RBI knock bringing Goodwin home before Senne scored on a passed ball soon after.

Leading 3-0, Rochelle continued to attack with six runs in the top of the fourth inning. Chandler Cunningham and Goodwin made the score 5-0 with consecutive RBI singles before Senne blasted an RBI double on a hard grounder to left field. Two batters later, Dylan Whaley crushed a two-RBI double to center, allowing Goodwin and Senne to score. Daniel Betancourt capped off the explosive six-run rally for the Rochelle All-Star offense with a two-out RBI single to left field. 

South Elgin earned three runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Both teams went scoreless over the fifth and sixth innings before Rochelle iced the win with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Back-to-back singles from Braden Hunley and Braden Behrens led to consecutive RBI doubles from Cunningham and Goodwin to give Rochelle a 12-3 advantage. With two outs in the frame, Van Gerber hit an opposite-field RBI single to score Goodwin.

Hunley threw a complete game for the Rochelle All-Stars, totaling seven innings with eight strikeouts and only two hits allowed. Goodwin went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs, while Senne went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Cunningham went 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs. Behrens and Hunley each recorded two hits and two runs scored in the win.

East Side

Rochelle fell behind in the bottom of the first inning, where East Side totaled two runs before adding five runs on two hits and three walks in the bottom of the fourth inning. Trailing 7-0, Rochelle saw East Side score two runs on two hits and two walks in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ethan Goodwin and Daniel Betancourt singled for Rochelle’s only two hits of the game. 

Goodwin started on the mound for the Rochelle All-Stars, throwing three and two-thirds innings with six strikeouts and two hits allowed. Evan Stinnett entered in relief, tossing two and one-third innings while striking out four. Chandler Cunningham and Dylan Whaley each drew walks.
